Keep Kids Weight Down, Beware of Diabetes

Many people who do not know that children can be affected by diabetes, making diabetes in children is often delayed and ultimately not helped. Weight continues to drop and weakness is an easily recognizable symptom of diabetic children.

In contrast to adults who are most affected by type 2 diabetes because of unhealthy diet, diabetes is more common in children is type 1 diabetes. Diabetes mellitus (DM) type 1 diabetes is diabetes that occurs because of damage to pancreatic beta cells. Damage to the pancreas is not able to make the body produce its own insulin.

Dr. Aditya Suryansyah, SpA, explains the many people who do not know about the DM type 1. Most parents would be shocked because suddenly the child has severe diabetes and had to be hospitalized because of high blood sugar. Late detection eventually cause the child beyond help and died.

The most typical symptoms in type 1 DM is the son of a lot of eating (polyphagia), lots of drinking (polydipsia) and a lot of urine (polyuria). But before these symptoms appear, usually the child will experience other symptoms ie fatigue and his weight continued to decline.

"Better as a benchmark, if the child suddenly eat a lot but tend to be thin, no matter if we check his blood sugar.'s Why we recommend that every sick child's doctor for blood sugar screening. Type 1 diabetes is often overlooked," said Dr. Aditya Suryansyah, SpA, Secretary of the Group Work Unit (UKK) Endocrinology DKI Jaya of Indonesia Pediatric Association, on the sidelines of a media gathering at the House of the Ministry of Health, Jakarta, Friday (11/18/2011).

Until now I have no definite figures relating the number of children with type 1 diabetes mellitus in Indonesia. But according to data UKK Endocrinology, until October 2011 the number is estimated to reach 724 children with growth of about 240 new cases / year.

"If in type 2 diabetes, the pancreas is still good, good insulin, only the sender of insulin mediator is not good, hypertension or obesity due to insulin does not work optimally. Whereas in type 1 diabetes, the pancreas is damaged, the device that produces insulin. So children require insulin from the outside, the lifetime cost could reach 1-2 million per month, "said Dr. Aditya.

Dr. Aditya explains type 1 diabetes can be caused by a virus, children are often sick, autoimmune and genetic. But the majority of the causes of type 1 DM is a genetic factor, which is about 90 percent.

Type 1 diabetes can strike children from birth, infants or children, but the average age of DM 1 in children is 6 to 10 years.

"Children are exposed to type 1 diabetes require insulin for life. When the DM quickly detected and the child can be handled properly, then the child can grow up like normal children (without DM), could be an athlete, the origin of insulin road continues," concludes Dr. Adit
