Pirimidone, Drugs to Control Seizures

Primidone used alone or in combination with other drugs to control seizures (convulsions) in the treatment of epilepsy. This is an anticonvulsant drug that works in the brain tissue to stop the seizures. These drugs are only available by prescription.

Indication

1. General tonic-clonic seizures
2. Partial seizures
3. Essential tremor

Contraindications

1. Patients who are hypersensitive to this drug
2. Porphyria
3. Severe respiratory depression
4. Gestation
5. Lactation

Dose

1. Adults, teenagers, and children aged over 8 years:
At first 100 or 125 mg once daily. Your doctor may increase your dose if needed. However, the dose usually is not more than 2000 mg a day.

2. Children younger than 8 years:
Initially 50 mg once daily. Your doctor may increase your dose if needed.

Side effects

1. Trembling
2. Other problems with muscle control or coordination
