Brain Exercises Can Make Elderly No Stodgy Again

Elderly man who had been generally known for archaic (ancient) and can not change his personality. But it turns out to train mental abilities, the elderly can also change his personality became more open to challenges and new ideas.

This study is the first time demonstrated that in addition to providing drug treatment or psychotherapy, can change the personality of the elderly. These findings dismissed the assumption that the personality of adults, especially elderly will still resist change.

The study, involving 183 adults aged 60 to 94 years. Approximately half of the participants enrolled in training programs designed to enhance cognitive pattern recognition and problem solving skills.

The program is conducted for 16 weeks, includes classroom sessions and a set of problems and puzzles to be solved at home. Puzzle difficulty level increases from time to time, but tailored to the skill level of participants based on scores obtained previously. As a control group, half of the participants are not included in this training program.

This training program is designed to be challenging without being too excessive. It is a good combination to help one become comfortable with new experiences and challenges.

Cognitive ability and personality tests given at the beginning and end of the study. Personality tests to assess the five major personality traits: extraversion (sociable traits), friendliness, awareness, neuroticism and openness.

Openness is a measure of how open a person to the challenges and new things. People who score high on openness tend aspects curious, creative and open to new ideas and intellectual pursuits.

As expected, the task of solving this problem can improve the skills of the participants. In addition, participants who completed the program experienced an increase in value on the personality trait of openness compared to those not participating in this program. While the scores for other personality traits do not change during the study.

The growing confidence in the ability of elderly reasoning may be activated by a greater pleasure from the efforts of challenging intellect and creativity.
